I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend : )
Our week:
Phonics- we are moving into short vowel sounds. These sounds are very important to have a strong foundation in as we will be blending letters to make words, building words, identifying rhyming words- all this leads up to students being able to decode words with that vowel sound in a text.
Sound of the week: Short a
Readers Workshop: Readers use character words while reading, readers connect the pages of a story using the words next, then, after- and readers point to words they know in the text.
Writing: Morning Stories are starting this week. Students will work on responding to a prompt on the board. This weeks morning story focus will be: writing using the whole line on the page; I will also be checking for beginning each sentence with a capital letter and ending with a period.
Handwriting: Writing letters Ll, Ii, Tt, ? and !- our focus is to practice vertical lines in lowercase and uppercase letters and using the head (top line) and shoe line (bottom line) to hold the letters tall and strong.
Math: solve problems- take from, solve problems- compare situations, adding to
For comparing problems students are expected to tell how many more- and how many fewer. Pictures will be give to support the child's thinking and crossing out the exact amount is needed to solve the problem.
Example: Sue has 3 dogs. John has 1 dog. How many more dogs does Sue have.
The answer would be- Sue has 2 MORE dogs than John.
OR
Mary buys 10 apples. Chris buys 5 apples.
How many fewer apples did Chris buy than Mary.
The answer would be Chris bought 5 fewer apples.
Updates/Reminders:
Friday Folders- please return empty folder if you have not done so.
NO sight words this week- due to the short week will be reviewing previous weeks sight words. I ask that you review the sight word journal with your child and go over the ones they have missed.
NO book log this week. Our book log template is currently being updated.
Cooler weather- please dress your child appropriately for the changing weather. Students will try to sneak out/hide their coats because they do not want to wear them during recess- my rule is: no coat on- no going outside.
